The Seward House Museum, Friends of Seymour Library and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Cayuga County sponsored a free presentation, Mr. Seward for the Defense - The William Freeman Trial, on October 5th at 1:00 PM at Seymour Library. Using the historical context of the case, the event promoted mental illness awareness and local history on William Seward, a lifelong advocate for human rights. In 1846, William H. Seward in Cayuga County Court House defended William Freeman accused of murder and based his plea on the unprecedented grounds of insanity. Although scorned for his progressive beliefs on race and mental illness, history has since vindicated Seward as a man of principles, courage and foresight. The presentation was given by Allison Hinman, former Seward House staff member, who researched this topic for her senior thesis from Westminster College in 2011.
